The battery, excepting two guns sent to report to Colonel Govan about noon, occupied this position during the days action. It was repeatedly charged, the enemy once penetrating to within fifty steps of the guns. The artillerymen maintained their position and used canister at short range. Lieut. H. Shannon, commanding, was wounded. The command devolved on Lieut. Joseph Ashton; in a few minutes he was mortally wounded. The command then fell on Corporal F. M. Williams. So many non-commissioned officers and men had been killed and disabled in the battery that a detail from the infantry was required to work the guns. Casualties not reported.
