This industrial complex evolved from a sawmillthat operated here prior to the Civil War. In1887, three brothers, Paul D. Camp, James L.Camp, and Robert J. Camp, founded CampManufacturing Company, later Union Camp CorporationThe lumbering enterprise pioneered aprogram to purchase land as well as timber rights, allowing extensive reforestation efforts. Thefacility is a major producer of paper, paperboard,lumber, and particleboard. The Blackwater Riverand the railroads have traditionally providedtransportation for raw materials and manufacturedproducts for the western Viginia Tidewater area.
