Throughout the 19th century sailing shipsdocked at wharves along this waterfronton either side of the present bridge to loadwith plantation goods. Primarily rice andSea Island cotton, lumber and naval stores.This activity made Darien one of the leadingseaports on the southern coast. Port activitywas interrupted for several years when thewaterfront was burned during the destructionof Darien by Union forces in 1863.
