Mural & Historic Markers Dedication

— May 4, 2013 —

In 1828, the Cayuga-Seneca Canal opened in Montezuma allowing transportation of people and goods into the Finger Lakes and beyond by connecting with the Erie Canal at this site. The Exchange Hotel provided lodging for travelers and was the center of town activities including town elections and board meetings. Now more than a landmark, it has been transformed again into a place where community has come together to reclaim our heritage and the value it holds not of only our past, but for its future. The piles of trash, falling down shed and trailers were removed to make way for the new historic mural, roadside marker, kiosk, landscaping, and bench as a welcoming site to connect the hamlet to the Montezuma Heritage Park. The muralist, Dawn Jordan, researched and created the mural based on photographs at this historic site and of Colonel Comfort Tyler who built one of the first boats on the Erie Canal launched in 1820, named "The Montezuma." We are grateful for the lasting works of community art Dawn has created depicting the Erie Canal heritage of Port Byron, Weedsport and Jordan and now here in Montezuma. It is with deep appreciation that the Town of Montezuma and the Montezuma Historical Society acknowledges the generous funding, support and time of organizations, businesses and volunteers who helped to make this possible. Pomeroy Foundation, A-Verdi Containers, Parks & Trails, New York, Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, Artcraft for Assistance with Logo Design, Image Agent for Assistance with Signs and Markers, And the Dedicated Hours of Volunteer Time from Members of the Montezuma Heritage Park Design Committee.
