This Memorial is dedicated to the members of the First Marine Raider Battalion. Led by Lt. Col Merrit A. Edson, their courage in combat stood forth at Tulagi, Guadalcanal, and New Georgia, B. S. I., during World War II. Their heroic action during the Battle of Bloody Ridge, 12 - 13 September, 1942, defeated the major Japanese attempt to destory the U. S. Marine forces on Guadalcanal.
