Popul Wuj

EnglishThis commemorative stela was erected to mark the end of the Thirteenth Piq B'ak'tun-(Oxlajuj B'ak'tun), which fell on the twenty first of December of 2012, the Winter solstice. A Piq-B'ak'tun is a period of 400 Ab'-Tun (360 days) in the long count or Maya Choltun. Two identical stelae were erected, on in Chi Iximche' and the other in Chuwa Nima'ab'aj (Mixco Viejo), as they were the most important ceremonical centers in the Kaqchikel Territory. Faithful to the natural and astronomical orientation of the Maya, both stelae were oriented to the setting Sun. Below or near each stelae a time capsule was buried containing documents to read at the closing of the present Piq-B'ak'tun-, which will be in the year 2407 in the Gregorian calendar. The stelae were created by a network of Kaqchickels, with the support of some of Maya and non-Maya, who sought to update both the ancestral form of commemorating the ends of eras and the beautiful maya hieroglyphic writing. The Kaqchikel carver who elaborated these ending statements and composed the Stela was Josué Emerson Chicol Simón, of Chi Xot (Comalapa). The technique he used as to form the modeled relief used a powdered marble mixture in a silicon rubber mold. This reproduced the style of relief of the late classic Maya. The weight is between 3 and 4 tons. The content was written by Kaqchikel historians and activists and the text used classic Kaqchikel from the 1500s and the Maya hieroglyphic writing was done by Pakal Balam Rodríguez Guaján from Chi Iximché (Tecpán G.), Iger Xayón from B'oko' (Chimaltenango) and Iyaxel Cojtí Ran from Chuwila (Chichicastenango). The inscription contains 80 glyphs that register five key events in the history of the Maya People and three key events in the history of the Kaqchikel nation. The Stela is directed to all Kaqchikels and to all the indigenous peoples of Guatemala and the world, so that they do not forget their knowledge and the heritage of their forefathers and their ancestors. "Do not forget the stories of our elders, of our forefathers." Kaqchikel Chronicles "Let's go. Let's get up. We won't stay here. Already the sun approaches." Popol WujRe Mayatz'ib re' nuq'alajirisaj ri Iximche'. Este es el Glifo Identificador de Iximche'. This is the identifying glyph of Iximche'.
