John White, a Black barber, operated his shop on this corner from 1868 until his death in 1879. On June 17, 1872, five-year-old Cy Goddard, Jr., was killed by a stray bullet, while seeking safety in White's barber chair during a street fight. The trigger - happy drunk responsible was fined $50 "for shooting pistols in town and thus endangering the citizens."
