This Brigade marching from the Kelly field as the reserve of Johnson's Division, was turned to the right opposite the Brock field to assist Hazen's Brigade of Palmer's Division, and charged forward with all its regiments in one line to the left of Hazen's position, forcing the enemy, composed of troops of Cheatham's Division, several hundred yards to the rear. The Brigade then withdrew to its left and rear, closed on Willich's Brigade, and occupied this line about 3 P.M. At dusk its line was heavily attacked by Deshler's Brigade of Cleburne's Division, and Preston Smith's Brigade of Cheatham's. General Smith was killed, and in the confused fighting which followed in the darkness nearly the whole of the 77th Pennsylvania, and about half of the 79th Illinois were captured, though many subsequently escaped. At the end of an hour's engagement the Brigade withdrew with
the Division to the Kelly Field and bivouacked.
