Negley's Division

—Thomas' Corps. —

Beatty's Brigade.
Negley's Division, - Thomas' Corps.
Brigader General John Beatty
September 19, 1863, 2 A.M., 1st Position.

104th Illinois, - Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Hapeman.
42nd Indiana, - Lieutenant Colonel William T.B. McIntire.
88th Indiana, - Colonel George Humphrey.
15th Kentucky, - Colonel Marion C. Taylor.
Bridges' (Ill.) Battery, - Captain Lyman Bridges.

Beatty's Brigade relieved Grose's Brigade of Palmer's Division on this ground about 2 o'clock in the morning of September 19th. At daylight the skirmishers of Helm's Brigade of Breckinridge's Division advanced from Glass' Mill and engaged the skirmishers of Beatty's Brigade about the cabin midway between the lines. Soon after five pieces of Cobb's, and next four pieces of Slocomb's Battery of that Brigade, supported by its infantry, took position on the west side of the river near the mill. The Batteries opened fire and were responded to by Bridge's Battery on this line, soon reenforced by three pieces from Battery M, 1st Ohio, of Stanley's Brigade of Negley's Division. The fighting was confined to the Batteries and the skirmishers, and continued about three hours, when Helm's Brigade was withdrawn to the east bank of the river and marched with its Division towards the Confederate right. About 5 o'clock p.m. Beatty's Brigade was withdrawn to Crawfish Springs whence it followed the other Brigades of Negley's Division to the vicinity of Widow Glenn's House, where it remained in reserve during the night.
