This historic park commemorates the campaign, siege and defense of Vicksburg during the Civil War. The Union victory here in 1863 established Federal control of the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in two. Although the war continued for nearly two more years, the battle here turned the tide that led to Union victory in the Civil War.

Vicksburg is the nailhead that holds the South's two halves together.
