Col. Robert Patterson, Revolutionary War soldier and founder of Lexington, Ky., settled here in 1804 and built this farmhouse in 1816. At his death in 1827, Rubicon Farm, with its sawmill, grist mill, stone mill (for wool carding) and sugar camp, covered 2,038 acres. Rubicon was home to three generations of Pattersons, including grandsons, John H. and Frank, who in 1888 erected the first building of their National cash Register Co. on family land just north of here.
