—————————————————
This homestead from the 1800s has "good bones" and great vibes. But the pulse of the museum is illustrated through the Acadians themselves—and their stories.
For example, meet Simon "Squire" d'Entremont, the first Acadian to be part of the Nova Scotia Legislature. Born in 1788, he had little formal education yet he learned how to speak and read in French, English, Latin and Mi'kmaq.
Before taking his seat in the legislature, Simon was asked to take the "Big Oath" and repudiate his belief in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the veneration of Saints. He refused, saying, "I would rather swallow a dogfish, tail first, than to swear to that."
Simon's father, Benoni d'Entremont, was captain of the "Bonaventure." On a trip from Sainte-Pierre et Miquelon, pirates seized the ship and sent everyone ashore. A good supply of liquor was aboard, so Benoni knew they would get hopelessly drunk. Through the night, with some help, the intrepid captain rowed with muffled oars back to the ship—and ousted the pirates.
Do you know?
This museum is more than just a museum. Here, traditions are celebrated from quilting bees to kitchen parties. The Acadian spirit lives on!
