In commemoration of Liberty Baptist Church which occupied a building on this site between 1915 and 1960. Formed as an African-American congregation in 1869, the Liberty Baptist Church was originally located at 18 and E Streets, NW, before moving to 23rd Street in 1915. In 1960, Liberty Baptist Church moved to 527 Kentucky Avenue, SE, where it remains active.
