September 20, 1863.

1st Lieutenant Richard W. Goldthwaite,Commanding.

The Battery followed the Brigade in its advance, coming into position about 10 a.m. on the continuation of this ridge south of the Deshler Monument and opened fire which was continued until the Brigade was retired. In this action 6 men were wounded and 2 horses killed. About 4 p.m. the Battery again moved to the front, coming into position on this ground, which was selected by the Chief of Artillery for the purpose of enfilading the enemy's barricades. Training the pieces to the right this Battery and Douglas' opened fire so vigorously that the artillery of the enemy was soon silenced.
About the same time Polk's Brigade charged and carried a position of the enemy's works, he being then in the act of retiring pursuant to orders received prior to this attack. As the infantry gained ground, the fire of the Battery was gradually turned farther and farther toward the left to rake the ground over which the enemy was retiring, till ordered by General Cleburne to cease firing. Casualties of the battle: officers wounded 1; men wounded 9;

horses killed 4; horses wounded 3.
