Cleburne's Division, with Polk's Brigade on the right, Wood's in the center, Deshler's on the left, advanced from this position at 10 a.m. in the general direction of this road, upon the Union line east of the Kelly Field. Polk's Brigade and the right of Wood's reached a point within 175 yards of the Union works, but after severe fighting were repulsed. The left of the Division penetrated to the Poe House west of the LaFayette Road, from which point it was repulsed, General Deshler being killed.

The Division was then assembled near the position it occupied before the advance. Late in the afternoon Polk's Brigade, aided by troops on the left, advanced on the northeast salient of the Union line before it received orders to withdraw. The Union troops maintained their lines for brief space and then withdrew hastily to the woods west of the LaFayette Road, followed by the Confederates to that point. Polk's Brigade reaching it a little before before dark. Total



force in action at the opening of the battle on the 19th of September, 3,115. Loss in two days fighting, 204 killed; 1,539 wounded; 6 missing: total 1,749. Percentage of loss, 34.2.
