Women Behind These Walls

I was living with my elderly parents at the time of the battle. On July 1 we went to our rear balcony to watch as skirmishing began west of town. When we heard please for water, we carried water to the front door and poured it into the soldiers' cups.

Moments after we left the balcony, a 12-pound shell demolished the roof and ceiling.

The next day, citizens and surgeons were busy caring for the wounded. On July 3, a cannon shell entered the room where two surgeons had just been sleeping, tearing away the mantel across the bed. Then after breakfast, another cannon shell entered the dining room, demolishing everything in its way.
