—The Museum in the Streets —

ON 2 APRIL 1864, DAVID BECKERpurchased an acre of land from Conrad Crounse for $400, along the newly laid railroad tracks. On
this land, Silas Hilton and Benjamin Crounse built a dry goods store, with rooms to let upstairs. The store was operated by Mr. Becker and Angelica Hilton, Silas Hilton's wife. The oldest continuously occupied commercial building in Altamont, the building has housed many businesses during the last 150 years, including
the post office, a barber shop, a tavern, a general store, a wine and spirits shop, a newspaper, a hotel, a bowling alley, an ice cream parlor, and several restaurants. The Home Front Café, with its WW II canteen theme, is the current occupant, continuing to serve the residents of Altamont and the travelers to the Village.
