B-1-7United States Marine Corps

—Medal of Honor —

For conspicuous gallantry at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as squad leader in the 1st Marine Division in action in Korea 12 September, 1951 with his company pinned down under murderous fire, Sargent Mausert left his covered position and ran through a fire-swept area to bring two critically wounded Marines to safety. Refusing evacuation despite a head wound sustained during the rescue, and his company ordered into the assault; he took the point and led his men in a furious charge against a series of bunkers. Knocked to the ground, he regained his feet, personally silencing one machine gun and leading his men in eliminating several more emplacements in the area. Reorganizing his unit for the fight to the final objective, Sargent Mausert boldly advanced alone into the face of machine gun fire. Again severly wounded, he still refused aid and continued the assault. He destroyed another machine gun before being mortally wounded by a hail of fire. Sargent Mausert, by his great personal valor and extraordinary heroism, inspired his men to secure the objective. His unyielding courage reflects the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gave his life gallantly for his country. Presented to the Village of Cambridge, New York by the 1st Marine Division Association, May 25,

1991.
