After serving throughout the Revolutionary War he freed his slaves and in 1800 moved from Kentucky to Indiana. In 1820 he came to Indianapolis and built one of the first houses on "donation land." In 1822 he moved from the "donation land" to this site. He died here a year later and was buried in his front yard.

His daughter, Patsy Wilson, married Samuel J. Patterson and lived here in the homestead—later known as the Patterson Home—until her death. Her daughter, Fannie Patterson Van Camp, was an honored member of the Cornelia Cole Fairbanks Chapter of the D.A.R. that erected this tablet.
