Sabine River & Northern

—1937 —

This Model NC diesel-electric switcher cost $91,500.00 has a 900 h.p., 12 cylinder, Winston 201 A engine, weighs 250,000 lbs. and has a cast frame (modern locomotives have a fabricated / welded frame).

Switch engines are used primarily to sort railroad cars at the rail yard. Upon arrival of a freight train at the receiving yard, a switching list is created showing the number, weight, and destination of each car in the train and to which track each car is to be switched. After a train is created, it is moved by a switch engine to the Outbound or Departure Yard and attached to a road locomotive where it will begin the next phase of its journey. Number 408 was donated in 1974 by the Sabine River & Northern Railroad.
