David the GoliathThe African Baobab Tree (Adansonia digitata) was blown down on the bus during Hurricane David on August 29th 1979. Fortunately the bus was empty at the time. The main stem is now more than 21 ft (6.4 m) in circumference and the two large "trees" are 19 ft (3.1 m) in girth. The 150 mph (241 kph) winds destroyed many trees within the Botanic Garden over a period of 6 hours. Caption: The Botanic Gardens the day after Hurricane David, August, 1979.
