Established before the Civil War, Sandfield Cemetery served historically as a burial ground for the African American community in Columbus. Among the approximately 250 people buried here are Rev. Jesse Freeman Boulden, a leader in the Reconstruction-era Republican Party and Robert Gleed, Sr., a former slave who served in the state senate. J.M. Coleman, a newspaper publisher, and Richard D. Littlejohn, Grand Master of the Prince Hall Affiliated Masonic Lodges, are also buried here.
