The Needmore Community, one of Starkville's earliest African American neighborhoods, was first settled in the late 1800s with the construction of the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad. Having a number of homes, churches and businesses, Needmore was once a thriving residential and business community. Encompassing Cherry, Demorest, Fellowship, Gillespie, Hancock, Jarnigan, Russell. Spring, Muldrow, and Vine Streets, this community was annexed by the city of Starkville in 1872.
