1896

— Brockville Historic Area: The Brock Trail —

This photograph, taken in 1896, is of particular interest because it documents buildings that no longer exist or that have been altered by the passage of time.
The grouping of buildings in the lower-left corner were standing on the present Water St. Parking Lot. The larger white stucco two-storey structure with pyramid roof (or hip roof) was the WOODBINE HOUSE hotel in the 1870s, and later called the AMERICAN HOUSE. Nearby, the land to the west later became the Broad St. baseball diamond in the 1940s.
Further up West Market St. is a small white double house with gable roof, which is still standing. The large stone building at the corner of King St. was the REVERE HOTEL.
On the right side is VICTORIA HALL (now our CITY HALL) and in its rear was the gable-roofed market building which was later expanded by the addition of two more floors. Outdoors, to the west of these buildings, was the BROCKVILLE FARMERS' MARKET. The market continues to be held in this spot today.
The walls and parapet of the BROCKVILLE RAILWAY TUNNEL are still standing.
