Delaware & Hudson Canal

This is the Boothroyd Dry Dock. You are looking in the same direction as the photograph below. Located at regular intervals along the canal, dry docks were used for repairing old boats and constructing new ones. Entrance was gained through a lock-like device — a top gate was opened to allow the boat to float on canal water onto a dock; the water was then released through a lower gate and the boat was left high and dry. Boats that needed repair were held off the ground with braces so that workers could reach the hulls.
Owned and operated by F. W. Boothroyd, this dry dock repaired, built, and occasionally stored boats over the winter. The Boothroyd dry dock is located at the beginning of the Phillipsport section of the canal, where a boat-building industry flourished during the mid to late 1800's. In the 1850's, a new boat cost about $400 and was expected to last five years.
