Inscription
Settled by Paul and Jacob Walter in 1784. Became a summer resort for Edisto, Combahee and Ashepoo planters. Incorporated in 1826. Since 1822 the County Seat of Colleton. In the court house was held, June 1826, the first Nullification Meeting under the leadership of Robert Barnwell Rhett, the "Father of Sucession." Robert Y. Hayne and James Hamilton.
