When Capt. John Nelson, sent by Gen. Marion, Jan., 1781, to the Sampit Road to reconnoitre, met Capt. Barfield and his Tories near White's Bridge, a sharp fight ensued. Lieut. Gabriel Marion, nephew of Gen. Marion, was captured and inhumanely shot about a quarter mile north of here. His name was fatal to him.
