The Hunting Island Lighthouse guidedmariners along the stretch of the SouthCarolina coast for many years. The firstlighthouse, constructed of brick andcompleted in 1859, was demolished byConfederate troops during the early daysof the Civil War.
This lighthouse, built of interlocking castiron plates,was completed in 1875. Thelight station was originally located on thenorthern end of the island, but severebeach erosion forced its relocation tothis site in 1889. The Hunting Island lightcontinued to aid navigators until 1933 whena buoy took over its function.
In addition to the lighthouse, the lightstation included housing for the staff,supplies and equipment necessary to keepthe light burning. Within this fence are the remaining original buildings and archaeologicaltraces of the Hunting Island Light Station.
