From the time Florence was established in 1818, a slow but steady growth occurred. In the late 1880s the town's population increased by 500 percent as an industrial boom began. This area became the core of the business district. Most of the structures within this district were constructed between 1880 and 1920. The district was placed on the National Register of Historic Place in 1995.
