In 1802, on his rice plantation in nearby Rantowles,John Champneys hybridized the first rose inAmerica. "Champneys' Pink Cluster" was a crossbetween the European "Millers' White Musk" rose (Rosa Moschata) and "Parsons' Pink China" rose(Old Blush). This new fragrant rose, with large clusters of small pink flowers, bloomed repeatedly. It became a sensation here and abroad.
