In 1893, seven pioneers who had just arrive in the new township of Morgan Hill built the Methodist Episcopal Church sanctuary on this land, which was donated by the Phillips Land Company. The church constructed with lumber hauled by wagon from San Jose, was Morgan Hill's first place of worship and its first schoolhouse. In 1894, the adjoining parsonage was constructed. Both buildings are examples of the American Gothic form of architecture popular at the time. The embossed tin plate interior of the sanctuary is also representative of the era.

In 1930, the church was moved thirty feet west to its present location to allow for widening of the street. The social hall and kitchen was also added at the time. In 1988, the sanctuary and parsonage were restored as the first project of the City of Morgan Hill's Historic Preservation Program.
