On Aug. 27, 1795, Padre Buenaventura Sitjar reported to Padre Fermin de Lasuen, Presidente of the California Missions, that the low land on both sides of the river at the proposed site of Mission San Miguel was sufficient to grow 300 fanegas of wheat. After the founding of the mission on July 25, 1797, this tract became one of the first wheat fields in California. 4700 bushels of wheat were harvested in 1800. This tract lies east of the mission.
