Battle of Washington
During the summer of 1892, Unionforces firmly controlled easternNorth Carolina, with garrisonsstationed at Plymouth, Washington, New Bern and elsewhere. Federaldetachments raided the countrysideat will, while Confederate authoritiesstruck back with raids of theirown. One such action occurred hereat Washington on September 6,when Confederate Maj. Stephen D.Pool led 1,000 infantry, cavalry, andartillery against the 1,200-man garrison. Concealed by early morningfog, Pool and his men slipped pastFederal pickets and into town. Oncethe shooting started, sleepy Unionsoldiers stumbled into the streetsand began a confused, uncoordinateddefense. Eventually the haze liftedenough for two Federal gunboats, Picket and Louisiana, to shell theConfederates. Suddenly, Picket's magazine exploded, killing Capt.Sylvester Nicoll and nineteen crewmenand wounding six others.HM Number | HM183Q |
