Capt. Joseph B. Campbell

Battery B rumbled down the Hagerstown Turnpike with the initial advance of the First Corps. The Battery fought against Stonewall Jackson's Confederates who at one point moved to within yards of the guns. The fighting became so desperate that Union General John Gibbon helped fire the cannons. Two Medals of Honor were awarded to soldiers in this battery, which lost 34 men killed and wounded. Capt. Campbell was wounded, and 27 horses were killed.
