Circa 1740
The Staats House is one of the finest remaining buildings from the second phase of Dutch immigration and settlement in the Raritan Valley. Abraham Staats was important locally as the county tax collector and the recorder of damages suffered at the hands of the British during the Revolutionary War.The house is also significant as the headquarters of Baron William Frederick Von Steuben in the spring of 1779 during the Middlebrook Cantonment. After a successful review of troop maneuvers on May 2, 1779 a dinner was served for about sixty officers under a tent in the grove near the house. At this visit French Minister to America, Conrad Girard, informed General Washington that the French would increase supplies to the Patriots.| HM Number | HM1RJP |
