—Building 92: United States Marine Commandant's Residence —

Thomas Ustick Walter (1804-1887) is considered one of America's most important 19th-century architects. A founder and early President of the American Institute of Architects, he designed the cast-iron dome of the U.S. Capitol and served as Architect of the Capitol from 1851-1865.

Walter designed Building 92 as part of the U.S. Marine Corps complex in 1858. It is the last standing building of the 3.5-acre complex that included Marine Officers' Quarters, Barracks and a Gate House. Marines were stationed as guards at the Navy Yard for more than 150 years.
