On 23 August 1944 the U.S.S. Hawkbill left Pearl Harbor to begin her first patrol. She sank a destroyer during her second patrol, and on her third patrol sank 2 submarine chasers and a cargo vessel. The Hawkbill completed 5 patrols during which she was credited with sinking 5 vessels totalling 7,856 tons. She earned the Navy Unit Commendation during these patrols. On 21 April 1953 the Hawkbill was transferred to the Netherlands where she served under the name, Zeeleuw.
