Willich's Brigade

—Johnson's Division —

Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery.
4 James, 2 Napoleons.
Willich's Brigade, Johnson's Division, McCook's Corps.

September 19, 1863.
Captain Wilbur F. Goodspeed, Commanding.
1st Lieutenant Edmund B. Belding.
1st Lieutenant Charles W. Scovill.
2d Lieutenant Roland G. Day.

Early in the morning the Battery with its Division marched from near Catlett's Gap via Crawfish Springs to the battlefield. The Brigade being ordered into action soon after noon, the Battery took position in its rear, leaving the caissons still further back. The Brigade having captured some artillery, the caisson teams were ordered forward and took off 3 10 pounder Parrotts, 2 Napoleons, and one caisson. (The 3 10 pounder Parrotts had previously been captured from 1st Michigan Artillery by the enemy.)
The Brigade advanced further and one section under Lieutenant Scovill took position on this ground in rear of the right of the Brigade; another section under Lieutenant Belding soon afterward took position to its left and rear.
Afterwards, to resist a furious attack by the enemy the whole Battery was formed on this line. In these positions the Battery opened on the enemy's lines with solid shot and shell till the Brigade withdrew, when the Battery under orders retired to the Kelly field in
rear of the infantry and bivouacked for the night.
