The Barrier Islands Center is a museum and cultural center whose Mission is to preserve and perpetuate the culture and history of Virginia's barrier islands through education, the protection and collection of artifacts, and the interpretation of this unique coastal way of life.

The barrier islands, lining Virginia's Eastern Shore coast, have been an important part of American history since 1614 when colonists set up camp to harvest seafood and distill salt from the seawater. Important elements of Eastern Shore culture have been derived from the many people and events that compose the history of the islands. Inside you will find the stories of those who lived, worked and played on the barrier islands and the pictures and artifacts in support of those stories.
