The Bermuda Hundred Campaign

Broadway Landing was located three miles up the Appomattox River from City Point. It was the main supply depot for Federal artillery during the siege of Petersburg. Artillery pieces and ammunition were transported by ship or barge and offloaded there for distribution to the Bermuda Hundred front or the lines encircling Petersburg.

The Hopewell City Marina can be seen in the distance downriver from I-295. That marina now occupies the site of Broadway Landing.

A close up of the image at left. The photographer just happened to capture the ghostly image of a dog standing on the bridge, forever recording a small piece of everyday life on the river during the final months of the Civil War.
