A detachment of the battery, under Lieut. T. Jeff Bates, served one 20-pounder Parrott rifle in this position, Third Louisiana redan, from May 18 to about May 21, when the Parrott rifle was disabled by the fire of the Union batteries and the detachment was armed with muskets: it served in this redan until about June 4, when it was ordered to report to Brig. Gen. Stephen D. Lee, and served on the line of his brigade to the end of the defense, July 4, 1863. Casualties in battery during the defense: killed 9, wounded 30, total 39. Aggregate reported casualties in battery during the campaign and defense: killed 18, wounded 40, missing 5, total 83.
