Canada's Oldest Courthouse
The first formal local government for what is now Yarmouth County was initiated in 1789 with the establishment of the Court of General Sessions of the Peace, which served the Districts of Yarmouth & Argyle. Consisting of local Justices of the Peace, it initially met in taverns, churches and other public buildings.
In 1801 it was decided to construct a courthouse and gaol (jail). Court met for the first time in its new lodgings in October 1805. Although this "court" heard petty criminal cases, it was primarily engaged in matters such as caring for the poor and building or repairing roads and bridges. Much later, the building was used as town offices for the district.
This is Canada's oldest courthouse. In 2005 it was designated a National Historic Site. Next door is the Argyle Township Court House Archives-the first municipal archives in Nova Scotia. It is an important centre for genealogical research.
