Tenleytown, DC
—Country Village to City Neighborhood —
As an early country village, Tenleytown inhabitants held occupations such as farmers, millers, tavern owners and shopkeepers. Since horses provided the primary method of transportation until the early 1900s, blacksmithing was a popular occupation in Tenleytown's crossroads location. One such blacksmith shop (pictured here) was located at the present day intersection of Wisconsin Avenue, Brandywine Street and 41st Street. Tenleytown was named after John Tennally who settled here in 1735. His tavern was located at the current 4539 Wisconsin Avenue site.HM Number | HM24BB |
