John A. Lovell worked initially on railroads and in the timber industry before entering into surveying. As a surveyor and engineer in Lafourche Parish during the first half of the 20th century, Lovell gained fame for his knowledge of the region's terrain and amassed a collection of old plats of Thibodaux, Houma, and of Lafourche and Terrebonne and other parishes. After his death, his valued collections of historical and surveying resources were filed at offices of Louisiana Land and Exploration Co. in Houma. The collections are now housed at the Nicholls State University Archives and Special Collections Library.
