English Text:

The striking remains of the ancient city of Thyateira are located in the "Tepe Mezarligi (Hill Cemetery)" in the county town of Akhisar. The archeological excavations in this region were carried out by Professor Dr. Yusuf Boysal in 1962 and by Rüstem Duyuran in 1968 and 1969. The excavations were resumed in 2011 by a team under the supervision of Professor Dr. Engin Akdeniz. At the end of these excavations, a main building extending in the north-south direction and other connected structures surrounding this main building were uncovered. Architectural features of the structure and the vast amount of artifacts dated to the Roman period between the 2nd and 6th centuries A.D. suggest that the structure was used within this time period.
This group of structures has an appearance of a social complex with monumental dimensions, and some of its walls have been preserved up to a height of approximately 5 meters. At the centre of these structures stands the main building with a rectangular plan and an abscissa in the north side. The preserved structure is 10.8 meters in width and 48.70 meters in length from the abscissa. The actual length of the southern section cannot be determined, since it remains beneath today's modern street and buildings. Square and rectangular rooms and spaces were unearthed in the

west of the section with abscissa. These rooms and spaces are thought to extend to the eastern part of the building. However, the archeological research conducted in 2012 in the area called "SS8 trench" revealed that the eastern part of the building with the abscissa was severely damaged during the construction of the "Forest Administration Building." In the excavation carried out in the "Tepe Mezarligi" (hill cemetery), architectural elements and sculptures were uncovered, besides mosaics, frescos, glass artifacts and ceramics from the Roman and Byzantine periods. There are few remains from the Hellenistic period. Geophysical surveys point at the presence of monumental remains approximately 6 to 8 meters below today's walking surface (modern Akhisar).
