Fort Mitchell
Fort Mitchell is located on the Federal Road on the West bank overlooking the Chattahoochee River.
General John Floyd received orders from Governor David B. Mitchell to pick up supplies, cross the Chattahoochee River and proceed to establish a base of operation.
General Floyd's Georgia Militia of about 1000 troops with 300 friendly Indians began construction of a fort 150' x 250' with 2 diagonal blockhouses. Captain Jett Thomas was placed in charge of surveying and construction, while General Floyd with 500 soldiers left to fight small, nearby skirmishes and keep peace with the Indians. Fort Mitchell's major contribution in the Creek Indian War was the Battle of Autossee
near the Tallapoosa River. General Floyd was wounded in the knee but later returned to battle. The power of the Creeks was lessened by the time Andrew Jackson fought the final battle at Horseshoe Bend in March 1814. In 1825, a second fort was built on the same site. It was a smaller, square fort 100' x
100'. The most honored guest of Alabama at this time was French General Lafayette who came to Fort Mitchell and was welcomed by Indian agent John Crowell and the Creek Indians.
