Bradley's Brigade

—Sheridan's Division —

Battery C, 1st Illinois Light Artillery.
4 3" Rifles, 2 12 Pounder Howitzers.
Bradley's Brigade, Sheridan's Division, McCook's Corps

September 19, 1863.

Captain Mark H. Prescott, Commanding.
2d Lieutenant Joseph R. Channel.
2d Lieutenant Stephen G. Grubb.

Before daylight retired with its Brigade from Viniard line to the ridge west of Widow Glenn's. About 10:30 a.m. moved rapidly to this ground and came into battery in rear of General Davis' Division then advancing to the attack. General Davis line at this time was compelled to give way by the fierce assaults of the enemy, and Colonel Laiboldt's Brigade charged to the front, leaving the Battery without orders. The Battery fired 8 or 10 rounds, when the line in front was so badly broken and the men were coming through the Battery in such a confused mass, that it was impossible to fire, The Battery was retired to the next hill in rear of this position. When the crest of the hill was reached the guns were brought into battery and fired 6 or 8 rounds. Having no support and the enemy approaching, the Battery retired through McFarland's Gap and rejoined the Division at Rossville, where it bivouacked for the night. Casualties: 4 men wounded; lost 12 horses, 2 3-inch guns, 1 howitzer, 3 limbers, 1 caisson.
