Buckner's Corps

—Major General Alexander P. Stewart —

Stewart's Division - Buckner's Corps
Major General Alexander P. Stewart.

Brown's Brigade — Brigadier General John C. Brown
Bate's Brigade — Brigadier General William B. Bate.
Clayton's Brigade — Brigadier General Henry D. Clayton.
September 19th, 1863, 1:30 p.m.

This Division moving to assist the troops of Walker and Cheatham formed in rear of this position about 1:30 p.m. Clayton"s Brigade advancing engaged troops of Van Cleve and Palmer, which had forced Wright's Brigade of Cheatham to retire with the loss of its battery. After an hour's severe fighting with heavy loss, Clayton was replaced by Brown's Brigade. This Brigade, in turn, after not fighting, was relieved by Bate's Brigade at 3:30 p.m. The right flank of Palmer's Division was repulsed, mainly by a severe artillery fire from twenty guns posted diagonally across the LaFayette Road north of the Poe House. Meantime, Stewart, with Clayton, the left of Bate and a small part of Sheffield's Brigade of Law's Division forced King's Brigade of Reynolds' and Van Cleve's two Brigades across the LaFayette Road to the high ground about Brotherton's. Part of Bushrod R. Johnson's troops assisted in this movement. At 4:30, the Union line was driven back from Brotherton's, Clayton pursuing westward to a point near Dyer's

House. Stewart, threatened by the approach of Brannan's and Negley's Divisions, retired into the forest east of Brotherton's at sundown. Carnes' Battery was retaken by Brown's Brigade and several pieces of artillery captured from the enemy.
