Im Jahr 1719 ließ der wohlhabende Volkacher Kaufmann
Johann Georg Adam Schelf in der heutigen Schelfengasse
den Grundstein für ein repräsentatives Stadtpalais legen.
Das Hauptgebäude steht traufseitig zur schmalen Gasse.
Markante Fensterlaibungen und rot gefasste Gebäudekanten
gliedern die langgestreckte, prachtvolle
Barockfassade. Besonders die beiden Eingangsportale
stechen ins Auge.

(English translation:)

In 1719, the wealthy Volkach merchant, Johann Georg Adam Schelf, laid the cornerstone for a representative city palace in today's Schelfengasse

(Schelf Alley). The main building is situated with the eaves-side facing the narrow lane. Striking window frames and red-colored building edges divide the elongated, magnificent baroque façade. The two entrance portals are especially striking. The main portal on the left towers over a blown-up gable, on which the family crest is emblazoned between two cherubs: the client presenting himself as a self-confident citizen!

The right portal leads to the courtyard of the complex and
to the outbuilding, in which the city library
and the large social hall of the City of Volkach are located today.
The former social/entertainment rooms of the Schelf family remain
preserved on the upper floor of the main building -
the picture room, the oven room, the White Hall and the
Professor-Rösser room. Again, these reflect the image of the social status of the former owner.
The frescoes on the finely stuccoed ceilings show
mythological scenes, bearing witness to the taste and refinement of Johann Georg Adam Schelf.
