Københavns Universitet / University Of Copenhagen

On this site, after the reformation in 1536, the University built its first main building, which burned down during the great fire in 1728. After being rebuilt, it burned down again under the bombardment by the English in 1807.

The present building was built in 1829-36 by the architect Peder Mailing (1781-1865). Today it houses administrative offices and the University's Ceremonial Hall.

The eagle over the entrance gate was put up upon the recommendation of M.H. Hohlenberg, professor in theology, who saw in the eagle's high flight and sharp sight a symbol

of thought and science. He composed the inscription, COELESTEM AOSPICIT LUCEM, which translates to: It (the eagle) gazes over the heavenly light.

The Ceremonial Hall forms the backdrop for the University's celebrations, such as Matriculation in September and the Annual Commemoration in November.
